Originally released on VIP 25017. Let's see... imagine you're a radio programmer back in 1965, and this new Velvelettes single crosses your desk. It's from the hottest black label in the business, but for some reason they're using this V.I.P. label.

What's V.I.P.? Maybe it's a label Gordy's reserving for his B-string artists? Let's take a quick listen. Oh... sort of Martha & Vandellas meets the Supremes, huh? Not bad, but we got lots of that already. Next!

How else to explain the fact that this potential monster didn't even graze the charts? Both sides of this great reissue are back-to-back Velvelettes singles that should never have been ignored back in 1965, but were. Discarded without much notice, those V.I.P. singles will cost you over $200 each today! Note that they both feature a rare collaboration between Norman Whitfield and one of the Holland brothers. Too bad there weren't more! Unfortunately, this Collectables reissue is also becoming scarce.

With his note-perfect first album and great songwriting (produced by Richard Gottehrer, who served up so much great rock'n'roll froth in the 1960's with such acts as the Angels and McCoys), Crenshaw seemed like a new Buddy Holly. Note: The non-LP B side, which Bette Midler later took up the charts, is credited to 'Marshall Crenshaw and the Handsome, Ruthless and Stupid Band.'

Originally released on Liberty 55645. This is a new, unplayed copy of the Capitol Silver Spotlight reissue, in its factory sleeve. Besides being one of the iconic singles of the girl group era (even though it flopped here in the U.S.), this amazing recording is important because it's one of the earliest overt expressions of female sexuality on vinyl. When Jackie sings,

I can feel a new expression on my face
I can feel a loin sensation taking place

she isn't suggesting that she has to hit the bathroom. It's really quite remarkable, and may explain why U.S. radio declined to play it. British radio also stayed away, though they were thrilled when the Searchers covered it later in 1964, taking it to #3. The U.S. release made the top 40 at #35. Two other notable features of this recording are the Beatlesque guitar lead (who is that, anyway?), and the Phil Spector Wall-of-Sound production. This is truly one of those gems that were overlooked in their day but whose genius was acknowledged for posterity to enjoy.

Here's a beautiful copy of John Lennon's third solo single, which, as a marvelous article in Wikipedia points out, was one of the fastest records ever to be written, recorded, pressed, and shipped to market---reportedly in only 10 days. It's also one of Lennon's very best solo recordings, though it (and the two singles that preceded it) never appeared on a Lennon studio album (they did appear on a later compilation LP). The drumming is simply out of this world, and turns out to be by future Yes drummer Alan White. That's Billy Preston on the keyboards, and George Harrison on guitar. The flip is 'Who Has Seen The Wind' by Yoko. I'm putting a snippet that contains some of the best drumming bits in the jukebox... just can't ever hear that break enough! Note: The picture sleeve has some slight fraying along the top on this copy.

Stereo/Mono promo copy. This forgotten classic is one of the last gasps of great soul music, before it was swallowed up by Funk, Disco, and the bland style I refer to as "Modern Soul." Interestingly, although it falls way down the list of Ronnie Dyson's big hits on the Billboard Hot 100, it was his biggest hit on the Black/RnB chart. It also surprises me that the track isn't more sought after by fans of Northern Soul, since it would undoubtedly be drop-dead brilliant on the dance floor!

Both tracks are among the best from the superlative Singles soundtrack, and even the radio-friendly side by former Replacements leader Paul Westerberg couldn't get a spin. Oh well... if you're looking for a brief encapsulation of the state of Rock'n'Roll in 1992, this is a great place to start. Or look up the Singles soundtrack, which features other cuts (often only available on that album) by Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Love Bone, Mudhoney, and Smashing Pumpkins--in other words, the cream of the crop of the Seattle-based grunge movement initiated by Nirvana.
