Another great two-sided classic from this underrated group, showing what a truly serendipitous partnership Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman had formed. When he avoided going over the top on vocals (as he occasionally did), Cummings was a classic Rock vocalist with a gift for melodic pop hooks behind most of their big hits. Somewhat in the background, guitarist Randy Bachman could also write lyrics and tunes with the best of them, and he understood the importance of rhythm, rock's rougher edges, and how to seamlessly meld them with Cumming's pop instincts. Of course, he later proved he could form a different kind of rock band�one with that harder edge but with the catchy, Top-40 side of great Power Pop�when he teamed up with vocalist Fred Turner in Bachman-Turner Overdrive.

Here, the A side was the Top 10 hit, and the B side nearly as famous. "Undun" features both lyrics and music by Bachman, and shows him waxing philosophic in his tale of a "fallen" woman. The arrangement is reminiscent of what Todd Argent had been doing with the Zombies, and in particular echoes their Spring 1969 hit, "Time of the Season."

This was the group's first big hit in the U.S. An oddly compelling song, I shudder at the thought that I might actually like it... and then realize that teenagers are rediscovering Queen, and this song is a cult hit all over again. Still, there's no argument that the flip side is a must-have glam-era rocker. From a warehouse find, this is a new, unplayed promo copy, in its original factory sleeve. Jesse Davis made a name for himself in the 1960's and early 1970's as a session guitarist, playing for a vast array of big and rising stars, including Eric Clapton, Neil Diamond, John Lennon, John Lee Hooker, Taj Mahal, and The Band. He also put out a handful of solo albums featuring a lot of talented friends and acquaintences such as Dr. John, Merry Clayton, and Leon Russell. As you can hear from the jukebox snippet I'm adding, his sound is hard to categorize, but most nearly falls in the range of The Band's southern rock/country-rock orbit. (Note: This artist is Jesse (Ed) Davis, not Jesse Davis the jazz artist.)

This is a gorgeous, faithful cover of the Shadow Morton-produced Shangri-Las record of the previous decade. It's particularly well suited for Midler's voice, and she doesn't disappoint! One weird thing is the writer credits on this release. On the Shangri-Las original, the A side is credited solely to Harry Nilsson. Here, Nilsson's just one of three co-writers. Riding the wave of the British invasion, The Mindbenders had a knack for releasing catchy singles but somehow missing out on the celebrity fame of fellow bands like the Beatles, Dave Clark Five, Hollies, Herman's Hermits, Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, Kinks, Who, etc. Like John Lennon and Paul McCartney, lead singer Wayne Fontana typically sang without showcasing his British accent, so some fans might have mistaken them for an American band. In fact, they were more successful in the U.S. than in their native country. Besides great tunes and a great lead vocalist, the band also featured lead guitarist and songwriter Eric Stewart, who later became a founding member of 10cc. Another 10cc member, Graham Gouldman, joined the Mindbenders in 1968, so all in all the band had a lasting pedigree even if their overall impact at the time was understated.

This particular single, their second Top 10 hit, bundled a terrific rocker on the flip that is among their best (IMHO). Its raw sound and brash lead guitar put it firmly in the school of garage rock, and showed how even their B sides were worthy of the label "classic," though they failed to make an impression on the airwaves. Here's a Greenaway-Cook rarity that will keep your toe tappin' and your mouth smilin'. This was the group's last single on Co & Ce, and unfortunately never made it onto Top 40 playlists. When MGM picked up the Co & Ce catalog, they released this one Vogues single. It would be a year and a half before the group re-emerged on Warner Bros.' Reprise label to score a couple of hits in 1968-69. Note: This copy comes in a vintage MGM Records factory sleeve.
