Now here's a very rare item... One I didn't even know existed until it turned up today. This single was issued only as a radio station promo, presumably released on the heels of "Bridge Over Troubled Water." The A side was the B side of that monster classic. But it's the flip side of this promo that makes it even more special to me. "America" is one of the very best songs from the duo's previous album, Bookends, but was never on 45 rpm until this promo. An iconic portrait of a young man's yearning to understand his country, it's a classic that's much beloved by Simon & Garfunkel fans. And now it's available for spinning as a single!
Even better, this copy is pristine mint, including the audio. Because all Columbia singles from this era were pressed on styrene rather than vinyl, it was typical for worn needles to chew up the audio rather quickly. Often, a copy will look mint, but the audio is marred by the typical high-end frequency loss that is typical of worn styrene. However, although vinyl is more durable, truly mint styrene has virtually no surface noise whatsoever and always sounds better than mint vinyl. And that's what you have here... enjoy!
Note: The jukebox snippet on our website has been edited to splice the last verse onto the first chorus. This copy comes in a vintage Columbia Records factory sleeve.
