Promo 45s With Unique Edited Versions

  • 40 min read

Promotional 45 records from the 1960s-80s occasionally had specially edited versions for radio play. This list shows promo 45s that have edited versions that don't appear on the retail (stock) copies or the associated LP. The most interesting such promos have the special edit on one side and the album version on the other. Sometimes the edited version is in Mono, while the LP version is presented in Stereo. As the list indicates, use of special edited versions accelerated through the 1970s and 1980s. The list ends in 1989, after which record companies pretty much ceased sending promo 45s to radio stations and disk jockeys. In the list information, if both a "Short" and a "Long" version are shown, the promo 45 contains both versions. Otherwise, no "Long" length is shown. In a few rare cases, the promo has a longer version than that which appeared on the retail copies. This list is by no means comprehensive, and I apologize for any listings that should appear instead in the "Retail Edits" list, since in some cases the promo has the same edit as the retail release, but the retail release did not indicate it had an edited version. In the list, edits that are more than 2 minutes less than the LP version are highlighted in yellow, while edits more than 1 minute less are highlighted in white.

Note: This list is a work-in-progress. Entries of "0:00" are ones for which I have not yet verified track length. If you know of a record that should be here, send me a note through the Classic 45s Contacts page. The records are presented in rough chronological order. Last Updated 08/04/2021, this page shows about 340 45s.
