Kev Roberts' The Northern Soul Top 500 is the definitive guide for collectors of the U.K. Northern Soul scene. As a long-time DJ at many of the influential dance clubs in the north of England (where Northern Soul gets its name), Roberts provides insights to the music scene itself and into the rare U.S. soul records that have become so adored by the scene's fans.
At Classic 45's, we have started cross-indexing our inventory with Roberts' lists and will be entering all the 45's in the lists as time and availability permits. The Kev Roberts list numbers are highlighted with a blue semi-circle in our search results, as shown below.
Of particular interest to collectors of 45s from Kev Roberts' book is the growing list of 45s from the Louise Neal Collection that are in Kev Roberts' lists. Check them out here! Some will be offered for auction in coming months, and some will go direct to a set sale.
The 2004 Special Edition of Roberts book also includes a "new millenium top 100" that supplements the original Top 500 list. In addition, Roberts has an appendix that lists 100 titles that "bubbled under" his original Top 500. With all of these lists, there are actually 700 titles that make up the Top 500!
Now in its fourth decade, "Northern Soul" seems to become stronger each year as more and more soul music fans discover the pleasures that come from seeking out and locating those rare 45's, which have attained values far outpacing the peaks of highly collectable rockabilly and RnB group (doo-wop) 45's. Fortunately, with the health of the scene comes a healthy climate for vinyl reissue labels, and a good number of these jewels are now available for mere mortals to procure.
Be sure to also check out the Kev Roberts website for more information on the book and on Northern Soul in general.
