Surfin' Safari / Surfer Girl

Well, this single is actually more interesting than you might imagine... These aren't the familiar hit versions of the songs, but rather much earlier recordings made before the group had signed to Capitol Records. The recordings have been previously released on the album Lost And Found (1961-62), along with other tracks from the sessions they made at World Pacific Studios, for Candix Records. (The only single released from those sessions was "Surfin'", which only climbed to #75 in early 1962.)\r\n

The "Surfer Girl" track has much more of a garage-rock sound to it, and it's interesting to note that this is the first song Brian Wilson ever wrote — even though the group didn't re-record and release it until mid-1963.\r\n

\r\n

"Surfin' Safari" will particularly delight Beach Boys fans, because not only is the arrangement different, but it features Al Jardine on guitar rather than David Marks. Even more interesting is that the first and third verses are very different from those on the hit version they later recorded for Capitol — which became their first hit:\r\n

Verse 1:

\r\n
\r\n Early in the morning we'll be startin' out
\r\nSome honeys will be bakin' the scene
\r\nI loaded up my Woody
\r\nWith the boards on top
\r\nAnd I put on my faded blue jeans\r\n
\r\n\r\n

Verse 3:

\r\n
Well surfin is big in sunset beach
\r\nThey do it in South Africa too
\r\nThey're all getting stoked
\r\nOn the surfing craze
\r\nFrom Hawaii to the shores of Peru.

Verse 1:

\r\n
Early in the morning we'll be startin' out
\r\nSome honeys will be coming along
\r\nWe're loading up our Woody
\r\nWith our boards inside
\r\nAnd headin' out singing our song
\r\n\r\n

Verse 3:

\r\n
They?re anglin' in Laguna in Cerro Azul
\r\nThey're kicking out in Dohini too
\r\nI tell you surfing's mighty wild
\r\nIt's getting bigger every day
\r\nFrom Hawaii to the shores of Peru
