(The Lights Went Out In) Massachusetts/ Sir Geoffrey Saved The World

Back in November 1967, this great early Bee Gees single became their biggest hit to date, right after "To Love Somebody" and "Holiday." But they didn't reach the top 10 until the next year, when both "I've Gotta Get A Message To You" and "I Started A Joke" did the trick for this versatile Australian trio. Of course, their later career(s) saw new chart heights with spectacular, record-making success in the 1970s. By the way, don't ignore the relentlessly catchy, uptempo B side despite its "to my ears" silly title. Only an Englishman could write such a title. :-) Still, it's a B-side "throwaway" that demonstrates just how easily catchy melodies flowed from the minds of this trio of brothers over the years, even from the very start. By the way, this was a non-album single that fell between albums. Note: This beautiful copy has a small drillhole and comes in a vintage Atco Records factory sleeve. The awesome audio sounds pristine Mint. (This scan is a representative image from our archives.)
