The Velvelettes

The Velvelettes were an American female vocal group, popular during the early to mid-1960s. The group was signed to Motown Records, contributing to the distinctive sound of the label with their R&B and soul influences. Although they never achieved the same level of commercial success as some of their label mates, their harmonious vocals and memorable singles like "Needle in a Haystack" and "He Was Really Sayin' Somethin'" have left a lasting impact in the realm of Motown music. The group was primarily composed of sisters Carolyn and Millie Gill with cousins Bertha Barbee-McNeal and Norma Barbee, who were all students at Western Michigan University when they were discovered.
