45 Labels and Sleeves
Want to see the entire history of a certain record label's 45 label design? How about knowing exactly which factory sleeve came with each label? This great site will give you the answers.
Joel Whitburn's Record Research Books
Joel Whitburn has for many years produced the best, most comprehensive series of books for doing research into the Billboard magazine charts. He has separate books for Pop, RnB/Black, and Country, and books for looking up songs by name or by year. If you're into chart collecting, you definitely have one or more of the Record Research books.
UK Top 40 Hit Database
There are good reference books on the U.K. charts, too, but here's a great website where you can look up chart information for free!
Airheads Radio Survey Archive (ARSA)
Those who are into music charts will go nuts over this site! The group is compiling a fantastic database of all the local, top-40 radio station "surveys" from the 1950's until the format petered out in the early 1980's. Thus, I can now go in and see the charts from my home town of Louisville, KY, where WKLO and WAKY battled it out for the hearts and minds of young music fans for many years. I even have my own collection of charts from one of those stations, and I'll have to see whether ARSA needs them or not. This is a great supplement to the national Billboard data that Joel Whitburn compiles (see above).
Rockin' Country Style
This discography of country rock & roll and related records is a fantastic resource for collectors of rockabilly and country rock. It includes some song samples and many label scans.
Gibralter Encyclopedia of Progressive Rock
Fans of progressive rock will definitely get lost in here! Histories, discographies, reviews, and more!
Wang Dang Dula! Truly Excellent Artist Discographies
If you collect on "real 1950s/early 1960s rock'n'roll and rhythm'n'blues", you will want to keep this site bookmarked. These are some of the best discographies I've encountered on the web. The site has lots of other cool stuff to offer as well.
Spectropop
This amazing web site features an ongoing discussion forum whose members include major songwriters and producers from the 1960's pop/rock scene. A great to look for trivia and background info on obscure groups and recordings.
Record Turntables
Turntable options have really proliferated in recent years. Two good options to start your shopping for that new turntable you'll need to play your Classic 45s on are NeedleDoctor and Amazon.com.
