This is an "advance pressing" of the promo 45 ultimately released for this big hit. Credited to John Cougar, this was Mellencamp's first and only #1 hit on the Bilozoard Hot 100. By the following summer, he had shed his name of its "show business" fakery and went on to have a string of classic hits and LPs through the mid-1990s under his full name. This special promo has a "short" version (etched into the dead wax) on one side and the usual 4:18 album cut found on retail copies on the other. Note: This 45 record has Near Mint labels, and someone has written "short" below the catalog number on the "Short version" side (see scan). The vinyl looks only lightly touched, and the audio is very close to Mint.
