Boogie Down Productions was an influential American hip hop group, active from 1986 to 1992, and was known for its raw, minimalistic sound and politically charged lyrics. Formed by KRS-One, DJ Scott La Rock, and D-Nice, the group's music was a significant force in the evolution of hip hop's consciousness, addressing social issues such as violence and poverty. Their seminal album, "Criminal Minded" (1987), is considered a classic in the genre, encouraging the development of the "gangsta" subgenre. The group disbanded after the tragic death of Scott La Rock, but KRS-One continued the group's legacy as a solo artist.
