Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band was an influential American rock group active from 1965 to 1982, led by singer and songwriter Don Van Vliet, known as Captain Beefheart. Their music integrated elements of blues, free jazz, and avant-garde composition, with a distinctive style marked by surreal lyrics, complex song structures, and innovative time signatures. The band's most significant album, "Trout Mask Replica" (1969), with its experimental approach to rock and blues, has been cited as an influence on numerous genres, notably punk, post-punk, and new wave.
