Frederick II

Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor from 1220 to 1250, was a notable patron of the arts and an accomplished musician himself. His musical style embodies the traditions of the Middle Ages, focusing on monophonic liturgical chants. A polyglot, he composed poetry in Sicilian, Arabic, Latin and Greek, some of which are assumed to have been set to music. Although no music compositions of his survive, his influence on the arts during his reign was far-reaching, inspiring a cultural renaissance in Sicily.
