He was a member of the successful gospel group, The Pilgrim Travelers, in the mid-20th century and later transitioned into a significant role as a music executive. Alexander's major contribution was as the co-founder of SAR Records, where he nurtured the careers of R&B artists like Sam Cooke. His style was characterized by an organic blend of spiritual gospel elements with the more secular, emotive tones of R&B, making a significant impact on the evolution of soul music.
