The Checkmates

The Checkmates, an American R&B group, were known for their emotive vocals and soulful sound. Formed in the mid-1960s, the band's most notable members included Bobby Stevens and Marvin Smith, whose harmonies were distinctive of their style. They gained significant recognition with their hit "Black Pearl", produced by Phil Spector, which became a top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Despite their relatively brief period of success, The Checkmates' melodic, gospel-influenced sound had a lasting impact on the soul and R&B genres.
