The Gayletts

The Gaylettes, also known as The Gayletts, were a Jamaican all-female reggae group active in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The trio consisted of Merle Clemonson, Dawn Hanchard, and Beryl Lawson, with Lawson later replaced by Judy Mowatt who gained further fame as a member of Bob Marley's backing vocal group, the I-Threes. Their music combined elements of reggae, ska, and rocksteady, and they are best known for their hit single "Silent River Runs Deep". The group's influence lies in their pioneering role as one of the first all-female groups in a traditionally male-dominated genre.
