The Sugarhill Gang

The Sugarhill Gang

The Sugarhill Gang is an American hip-hop group, renowned for bringing hip-hop music from the underground to mainstream audiences. Formed in 1979, the original members were Wonder Mike (Michael Wright), Master Gee (Guy O'Brien), and Big Bank Hank (Henry Jackson). Their 1979 hit "Rapper's Delight" is considered the first rap single to become a Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, significantly contributing to the genre's acceptance in the music industry. Their style was characterized by jovial, party-themed lyrics and a simple, danceable groove, distinctively setting the tone for much of the early hip-hop scene.
