The Watts 103rd St. Rhythm Band

The Watts 103rd St. Rhythm Band

The Watts 103rd St. Rhythm Band, active from the mid-1960s to mid-1970s, was a pioneering American funk and soul group led by musician and songwriter Charles Wright. Their musical style, a blend of soul, funk and rhythm & blues, was marked by the use of heavy bass lines, tight rhythms and Wright's distinctive raspy vocals. The band is best known for its 1970 hit "Express Yourself," which has been widely sampled in hip-hop music, underlining their enduring influence on contemporary genres. Despite numerous line-up changes, the ensemble's energetic performances and Wright's innovative compositions solidified their status as significant contributors to the evolution of funk music.
